1.1 Background of the Study
Organization such as First Bank of Nigeria plc, are experiencing poor productivity of employee, poor attitude towards work, and the employee who has the necessary skill for his job sees himself as a professional in the organization due to lack of employee empowerment. The importance of human resources to any organization whether public or private has long been identified and cannot be over emphasized. Organizational objectives such as profit maximization, increased market marketer share and social responsibilities cannot be carried out without human beings who co-ordinate the activities of the organization. Staff empowerment is the heart of employee productivity, commitment, motivation and utilization. Many employees have failed in the organization because their needs for training were not identified and provided for as an indispensable part of management function.
There is no amount of automation that can dispense with a large proportion of bank staff since the degree of substitution between capital and men with the industry is small. There is need therefore to study the extent to which employee empowerment has affected organizations and offer suggestion to remove any possible loopholes. Empowerment is an organization effort to improve a person’s ability to perform a job or organizational role, it include what goes to the job as well as formal courses or pragrammes of facilitate learning and established of good work habit.
Reynolds (2004:20) points out that empowerment have a complementary role to play in accelerating learning, it should be reserved for situations that justify a more directed experts led approach rather than viewing it as comprehensive and all persuasive people development.
According to Armstrong (2006:82), Development is an unfolding process that enables people to progress from a present sate of understanding and capacity to a future state in which higher level skills knowledge and competencies are required. Development also deals with the activities undertaken to expose an employee to perform additional duties and to occupy management position in the organizational hierarchy. Development occurs through increased knowledge skill and understanding. It is a progress which individual make in an organization development, is concerned with the top management. In organizations employee empowerment contributes immensely to profit maximization and efficiency. Employee empowerment helps management to achieve organizational objectives and to develop skills and techniques in employees. Staff performance depends on the empowerment that such employees have undergone. Employee empowerment is an important aspect of human resources management, which every personnel manager must be aware of. It is very crucial because of a trained staff is likely to be highly motivated, competent and more productivity.
The significance of employee empowerment becomes more evident as employee face the challenges of new skills which will enable them to maintain their proficiency level or prepare them for future promotion.

Employee empowerment of manpower resource is inevitable and vital in organizations such as the First Bank of Nigeria in the attainment of their goals and objective.

– Employment Empowerment: It is the process of allowing employee to make their own decisions and getting employees involved in helping to make decisions that affect the entire company.
