Abstract

Terrorism no doubt has remained one of the most dreaded social malaises in the contemporary Nigeria. The threat posed to life and property by these clandestine groups cannot be adequately estimated. But the terrorists attacks on some Nigerian cities including Abuja, Kano, Niger e.t.c and most especially Bornu state where they started has remained a water shed in the annals of global terrorism. The attack no doubt has constituted one of the greatest threats to National peace and security, hence the new war against terrorism championed by the Federal government. The danger associated with terrorist activities has therefore increasingly become of immense concern to practitioners of national politics, scholars and national states men alike. Against this background, this study objectively examined the implications of this ugly trend to contemporary national relations and cohesion. As well as made some recommendations on how to tackle the problem of National terrorism.

1.0.    BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Global terrorism no doubt represents one of the most focal issues on contemporary international relations. Thus, the threat to international peace and security posed by terrorist activities has captured the attention of scholars and statesmen alike.

However, the Nigerian share of the global terrorist’s activities started in 2009 when an Islamic group launched a military campaign to create an Islamic state or a caliphate as it is called, the attacks approach including suicide bombing to place home their demand. With their base in Maiduguri, Borno state, the attacks has more than ever heightened scholarly interest in global terrorism, especially in Nigeria. Studies have been variously done on rising spate of global terrorism with recently more emphasis on Nigeria; these scholarly works have been very illuminating but nevertheless not exhaustive of all the issues associated with terrorism.

Against this backdrop, this particular work is geared towards adding to the existing literature on national terrorism by investigating the new challenges in contemporary national cohesion in regard to people’s welfare brought about by increasing terrorist activities. 1.5.    THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Terrorism in Nigeria has been viewed from different perspective all in the name of drawing conclusion as to why people indulge in violent action like terrorism. This work tries to know in consultation with other works of some scholars the challenges in people’s welfare. The theory employed in this research work is class theory as propounded by Karl Max. The theory states that struggle of social classes are inherent in the society. Conflict then is assumed to be a by-product of the contradictory and conflicting interest of social classes. This work is viewing the situation in Borno state as a product of conflict among opposing views that happen to find themselves in different camps or groups.

Deprivation of a kind still remained the most central in the causes of terrorism where one group that feels deprived resort to act of terrorism as a means of pressing home their demand, especially when other means of vesting their anger must have failed. The correlation between the theory and this work on class conflict made it suitable for this study.
