Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the environmental influence of the home on the academic performance of primary school pupils in Warri – South Local Government Area of Delta State and to make necessary suggestions for the needed remedies. Relevance literature was reviewed from text books and also people opinions were found out about the study. There is a general consensus that the standard of education has fallen. This is because most people do not realize that the home environment does influence the academic performance of primary school pupils.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The topic of study is specially designed to enable us examine critically the environmental influence of the home on the academic performance of primary school pupils and also to bring out those barriers hindering the performance of the children but before going further, it is good to consider the concepts and home.

edition, environment is the natural world in which people live home can be seen as an apartment that one lives in especially with his family living together. While influence refers to having an effect on a particular situation and the way it develops. Environmental influence can either be positive or negative in some environments, the children are influenced by their peers positively. This they do by always reading together and doing home work while in some environments, children are influenced negatively by not having time to read together and doing home work all they do is to play, watch films or to play computer games at home after school. Apart from peer pressures the home can also influence the academic performance of the child either positively or negatively. In some homes, parents care for, their children academically by encouraging them to read and buying them the necessary learning material required for their success. While in some homes, the parents do not have time to encourage or buy their children the necessary learning materials for the children. Success. For research, it has shown that those children who are influenced positively are those whose parents are well educated and are from high socio-economics status, which have all it takes to care for their children, while these who are influenced negatively are those from a broken home or poor background. It is based on these regard that attempts are made to find out the environmental influence of the home in the academic performance of the primary school pupils.
