THE HOTEL MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS IN SOME HOTELS IN ENUGU STATE.

Abstract

This project is all about the hotel management problems and prospects in some hotels in Enugu state. It tries to look into the problems encountered by hotels proprietors as well as hotel managers and the ways to ameliorate them. In a bid to put this work in it’s desired shape, it is divided into 4 chapters. Chapter one deals with the background, brify history of case study, problems of the study, objective, research questions, significance, scope, importance, limitation, and definition of important terms. Chapter two hints on review of related literature, while chapter three, is the research method and design were looked into as well as sources, population, analysis.Finally, chapter four, based on summary, recommendation, conclusion and questionnaires.
  • INTRODUCTION
    • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Hotel industry is defined as an establishment responsible for provision of food, drinks and accommodation to guests who are willing to pay for services rendered to them and who are in the state to be received.

It occupies a significant place in industrial sector of Nigeria particularly in Enugu state and the world at large. It provides job opportunity, foreign exchange as well as helping in the light of all these that every country like’s to manage its hotel industry well to enhance the hotel development.

System of management can be simple or complex matters, in this prevailing economic depression of our state and country. In helping to develop hotel industries in Nigeria, government establishment catering schools can encourage individuals to set up catering schools. Private and tourism commission set up its standard which every catering school must meet in terms of grading and classification.  There are also designed course for hotel industries both at local and international levels, all these were made to address the problem of hotel industries in the country; but despite all these, a lot of problems persisted.

There were cases of gross qualified personnel and poor human relations. As a result of these problems, Government in its effort to encourage hotel development in conjunction with national Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and international Training fund (ITF) to encourage the introduction of hotel management courses at advance level, Despite these efforts by the government it was discovered that these problems continued to exist. These therefore, form the basis for this study with a critical look at some hotels in Enugu state, particularly at Gold Valve hotel limited Enugu.

 

 

  • BRIEFY HISTRY OF CASE STUDY AREA.
Gold Value Hotel was established in the year 2007 and started operating in the 16

th

 April 2007; the same year of establishment. The hotel is a private investment in hospitality sub sector, and is owned by Mr. Ejike Echeziogu.

The hotel is located along No. 93 upper Chime Avenue, New Haven Enugu in Enugu state.

Gold valve Hotel has room capacity of about 43 rooms of different qualities, such as 2 standard rooms, 6 super Deluxe rooms, 20 super deluxe rooms, 8 Executive rooms, I Diamond rooms, 2 Gold Rooms, with restaurant and bars including bush bar, conference hall with about 60 seats capacity.

The hotel also has the reception area, which is the first place to enter in a hotel before getting to other departments.

It is managed by a team of 2 managers, the General manager and the senior managers of Administration with senior staffs and junior staffs. The hotel also has Big Generator for supply of power when NEPA fails and they have every departments required by the hotel industry, like House keeping, kitchen section, Restaurant, Bar, front Office, etc.

  • PROBLEMS OF THE STUDY

Hotel industries account for a large proportion of individual (Guest) in this state and are faced with numerous problems. These problems hinder the growth and development of hotel industries in some hotels in Enugu, there by limiting their potential contributions to the development of this Nation’s economy.

However, some hotel industries have roles they play in the economic development of less developed country or state like Enugu of course they remain important in the economies. The problems of some hotel industries in Enugu are lack of funds by the proprietors and the difficulty they encounter in raising funds.

Due to limited capital at their disposal and high interest rate of banks, they find it less attractive going to the banks for loan. The level of education of most hotel proprietors is another great problem because it imposes difficulty in managerial capacity; many even go into business without any training in the area. Another is lack of technology and operation problems confronting some hotel industries makes it difficult for them to grow. Lack of well trained staff is another serious problems in some hotels in Enugu; this affect both the income, growth in all area and more especially the guests that give birth to the growth of the industries.

  1. Bad management is one of the major problems that is facing some hotels in Enugu state how can good management be maintained?
  2. How can hotel industry be encouraged to improve their activities?
  3. what are the prospects open to some hotel in the areas identified?

 

 

 

  • OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
  1. Considering the problems in this research, the findings are expected to be of great importance to guide hotel managers and proprietors on effective hotel management and to enhance their performance. It will also be of guide on how to handle complex matter.
  2. To look in to the problems in the area of maintaining good management.
  3. To find out how activities in some hotels can be improved.
  4. To find out how to ratify or solve the problems.

 

  • RESEARCH QUESTIONS.

The research questions is divided in to section. A and B. it is optional, the respondent (s) should choose any answer of his/her choice and indicate it in the space provided.

  1. How long have you worked with the company ?
  2. Does the company have a favorable management climate that encourages you to put in four best towards the achievement of the company’s set goals?
  3. What type of problem do you normally face?
  4. To what extent do you solve those problems?
  5. To what extent are the goals of the organization realized
  6. To what extent do the unsolved problem affect the organizational goal?
  7. Has your output been affected by low moral or non-payment of staff salaries?
  8. Do you think that the company is producing up to its expected capacity?
  9. Do you think that the company has enough machines and equipment for production?
  10. If number 13 is “No” do you think that the company still has chance of improvement?
  11. To what extent do you solve these problems?
    • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY.

Hotels and other related establishments stand the better chance of maintaining their quality of services to customers and make them feel delighted.

This research work does not only benefit Gold value Hotel only, hut is expected to give a general overview of how to rectify the problems facing hotels and how to achieve  and maintain good management in hospitality industry, so that other hospitality industries or hotels who may come in contact with this work can gain from it.

This work therefore, entails on the improved way of important method to be used in ratifying or solving the problems facing hotels in order to achieve a good management and to enhance the growth of the industry.

 

 

  • SOPE OF THE STUDY

For effective research and convenience purposes, the scope of this research has been delimited and is strictly confined to the management problems and prospects of some hotels.

A good management of Nigeria hotels can enormously result in the improved economy of the country. The study area is limited to some hotels in Enugu using Gold value hotel as case of study.

1.7 IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

Considering the importance of the problems in this research, the findings are expected to be of great importance to guide hotel managers and proprietors on effective hotel management and to enhance their performance. It will also be of guide on how to handle complex matters.

  • LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

There are number of constraints the researcher encountered. These constraints among others, include the followings; Respondents, Time, finance and inadequate documented materials.

The researcher, being a student, to an extent limited her because of her course of study, limited time was given to her to complete assignment. The accompany financial needs also imposed a difficult task on her.

Respondents on the other hand imposed some limited actions to the study, some of them did not respond to questions asked on time thereby increasing the percentage of maximum time consumed.

There were inadequate documented materials, which would have aided this study, but some were not available when the researcher needed them. However, the researcher possible made maximum use of the time and materials available to her to accomplish the research goal.

1.9 DEFINITION OF IMPORTANT TERMS.

NBTE: National Board for Technical Education. This is a certificate of recognition awarded by technical colleges and commercial schools; the above body specializes in manpower development.

ITF: International Training Funds. This is a recognize international body that helps in training the workers. They also invest money into industries for up-liftmen of the industrialization of the country.

QUESTS: These refer to personalities that patronize the hotel industries for a purpose. They are also customers to the hotel.

PROPRIETORS: Hotel owners or any other business that is owned by one man.

MANAGERIAL INCAPABILITY: This refers to the incapability to manage properly by managers. The causes of this may be as a result of utterance or inadequate funds.

INSTRUCTORS: These refer to hotel operators.
